This topical antibiotic is not intended to be used for large or deep wounds; medical attention is required for these kinds of wounds. Follow the instructions that come with your Neosporin, or use as instructed by your doctor. Often it's applied three times per day to an area that has been cleaned and dried. Sometimes the application area can be covered. Talk to your doctor if the wound worsens, becomes tender, swells, or develops pus or other signs of infection.
The amount of Neosporin used is unlikely to cause side effects, however in extremely rare cases in other medications that use neomycin, hearing loss has occurred. Mild side effects are still rare, but may include itching or skin irritation where the Neosporin is applied.
