Alvesco is in the corticosteroid class of drugs. Corticosteroids help reduce inflammation in the body, and when inhaled, Alvesco reduces swelling of the airways in the lungs, which makes it easier for people with asthma to breathe. If your doctor prescribes this medicine, use it regularly to get the most benefit, and keep in mind that it will not provide quick relief from an acute asthma attack. You should always carry a ‘rescue’ inhaler with you in case you experience an asthma attack.
Side effects of Alvesco may include dry mouth, sore throat, hoarseness, coughing, headache, or a bad taste in the mouth. Most side effects are mild and will go away on their own, but tell your doctor if you have any side effects that last a long time or become bothersome. Call your doctor immediately if you have unusual changes in vision, sores in your mouth or throat, unexplained weight gain, unusual mood changes, or muscle pain. You should also tell your doctor right away if your asthma symptoms get worse after you start using Alvesco.
