Zyprexa is used to treat but not cure some of the symptoms associated with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in patients at least 13 years of age. As an atypical antipsychotic, it works by changing the level and activity of certain naturally occurring substances in the brain.
Common side effects of Zyprexa can include changes in personality, tremors, numb or tingly feeling, feeling tired or restless, speech or memory problems, increased appetite and weight gain (especially in teens), dizziness, drowsiness, headache, increased salivation, dry mouth, pain in your arms and/or legs, stomach pain, and constipation. Rare but severe side effects that require medical attention include severe nervous system reaction (high fever, confusion, rigid muscles, tremors, unusual sweating, fast or uneven heartbeat, feeling like you're about to pass out), liver problems, suicidal thoughts, hallucinations, unusual thoughts or behavior, confusion, hyperglycemia, dehydration, trouble swallowing or speaking, sudden weak feeling, fever with chills and sore throat, swollen gums, skin or mouth sores especially when painful, uncontrolled facial movements, or swelling in your hands or feet.
