This medication is a live vaccine, meaning it contains a small dose of a live virus intended to stimulate the patient's immune system into developing a resistance. This can be extremely important because the shingles virus is the same virus that causes chicken pox in children, meaning a large part of the elderly population can be at risk for herpes zoster (shingles). While the primary symptoms of shingles includes rash and excruciating pain, it can escalate into blindness, pneumonia, encephalitis, and death. Zostavax is administered as one subcutaneous injection, although your doctor may advise a booster shot. If you experience an allergic reaction to the first shot, you should not have the booster shot.
Common side effects include headache or irritation at the injection site, which may present as warmth or redness, swelling, pain, itching, or bruising. Some side effects can be severe, including: allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, hives, swelling in the face or lips, swelling in the tongue or throat), fever, flu-like symptoms, sore throat, severe rash with burning or pain, breathing problems, swollen glands. If you have any serious side effects, tell your doctor right away.
