This medication is a serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonists, which means it works by blocking serotonin, which can be responsible for nausea and vomiting in response to certain cancer therapies.
Some side effects can be severe and require you to seek medical assistance, especially if you've recently had surgery. These can include allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, hives, swelling in the face, lips, tongue, throat), jaundice, dangerously high levels of serotonin (hallucination, agitation, overactive reflexes, hyperactivity, fast heart rate, fainting or feeling as though you're about to faint, loss of coordination, fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), fast or pounding heartbeats, and blurred vision or loss of vision that can last as long as a few hours. Common side effects include headache, drowsiness, and constipation or diarrhea.
The generic for this medication is ondansetron, and the only alternate brand is Zuplenz.
