Prescription Tri-Luma cream is used to treat patients with moderate-to-severe facial melasma or brown discoloration patches when applied directly to the affected skin. Tri-Luma contains three active ingredients, fluocinolone acetonide 0.01%, hydroquinone 4%, and tretinoin 0.05% that are safely formulated to treat patients with melasma. Fluocinolone acetonide 0.01% is a mild corticosteroid cream that works by reducing skin inflammation, hydroquinone4% works by inhibiting the formation and synthesis of melanin to help lighten skin, and Tretinoin 0.05% works by increasing cell turnover to exfoliate skin.

The most common side effects patients experience while on Tri-Luma are mild burning, stinging, redness, dryness, tingling, itching, swelling, or peeling of skin.
