As a prostaglandin analog, this medication is intended for patients who are intolerant of or insufficiently responsive to other ophthalmic pressure medications. It helps relieve intraocular pressure due to wide angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension and works by increasing the flow of liquid out of the eye.
Common side effects include headaches and eye discomfort, such as dry eyes, eye discharge, heavy tearing, or feeling like there's something in your eye. This medication may cause discoloration of your eye or the skin around your eye. While not dangerous, it may be permanent, so discuss this risk with your doctor. Certain side effects, while rare, are severe and require immediate medical attention. These include blurred or decreased vision, unusual or severe burning or itchy eyes, unusually dry eyes, eye pain, pain with redness or swelling in the eyelid or inner lining of the eyelid.
There aren't other brands for Travatan Z at this time; however, there is a generic for the previous form of Travatan, travoprost ophthalmic. Because the formulation has changed, be sure you're receiving the correct medication when you fill your prescription.
