This medication is an injected selective serotonin receptor agonist used to treat but not cure the symptoms of an active migraine or cluster headache (e.g., severe head pain, nausea, sensitivity to light, and sensitivity to sound). It is believed to work by narrowing blood vessels, blocking pain signals, and restricting the release of naturally occurring neurochemicals responsible for migraine symptoms.
Serious side effects are rare but require immediate medical attention. Severe adverse effects may include chest pain; unusual nausea or sweating; sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body especially with drooping features, slurred speech, vision problems, loss of balance or coordination; seizure; anxiety; confusion; irregular heart rate; shortness of breath; numbness or tingling in your fingers and toes with pale or blue skin discoloration; sudden nose bleed; or sudden and severe stomach pain with bloody diarrhea. More common side effects only need attention if they persist or get worse.
