If you have insomnia, Rozerem may help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep through the night. It works similarly to melatonin, a natural substance that helps regulate your circadian rhythm. You should take Rozerem half an hour before you plan to go to bed, and you should only use it if you can dedicate at least seven hours to uninterrupted sleep. Although Rozerem is not known to be habit-forming, your doctor will still likely prescribe it for a short treatment period. If this medication doesn’t help you sleep better after a week of use, contact your doctor, as he or she may need to evaluate whether your insomnia is a symptom of a larger problem.
Dizziness and daytime drowsiness are the most commonly reported side effects of Rozerem. In rare cases, people using this medication have engaged in activities while still asleep--such as walking, eating, or driving—that they do not remember the next day. If you suspect or have been told that you are engaging in sleep activities, tell your doctor at once. You should also call your doctor right away if you have any of the following rare but serious side effects: unusual mood changes (e.g. new or worsening depression), missed menstrual periods, nipple discharge, or decreased libido.
Although the FDA has approved a generic form of Rozerem (ramelteon), it may not be available in pharmacies yet. The only other prescription drug in the same class as Rozerem is Hetlioz, a melatonin receptor agonist that is specifically used to treat disrupted sleep-wake cycles in people who are blind.
