As an anticonvulsant, this medication works by decreasing abnormal activity in the brain.
Never stop taking this medication suddenly as it can cause worsened seizures. Severe side effects require medical attention. These may include liver problems, severe electrolyte imbalance that causes dangerously low sodium, changes in mood or behavior, a severe skin reaction, signs of abnormal inflammation, problems with speech, problems with balance and coordination, sores around the mouth or eyes, difficulty swallowing, worsened seizures. Common side effects will only need medical attention if they get worse.
