Next Choice can be used to prevent pregnancy if it is taken within 72 hours after having sex. The longer you wait to take the pill, the less effective it will be. It works similarly to the way daily oral birth control works and prevents the release of an egg from the ovaries. It also thickens cervical mucus to make it harder for sperm to enter and may prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterus. Next Choice cannot be used to terminate a pregnancy.
Possible side effects from taking Next Choice include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, spotting and temporary menstrual changes, headache, breast tenderness, fatigue and dizziness. If any of these side effects persist, or if you experience severe abdominal pain, call your doctor. If you throw up within two hours after taking Next Choice, call your doctor to see if you should take another dose.
