Namenda is prescribed for the treatment of moderate to severe dementia from Alzheimer’s. It works as an NMDA (glutamatergic) receptor antagonist, meaning it reduces the effects of glutamate on these receptors. Overexcitement of these receptors by glutamate is common in Alzheimer’s patients. This overexcitement effects memory and eventually destroys these nerve cells.
Namenda side effect include dizziness, constipation, headache, body aches, nausea weight gain and sleepiness. If any of these side effects are severe or persistent, tell your doctor about them at your earliest convenience. Serious side effects that should be addressed immediately include hallucinations, depression, worsening symptoms and shortness of breath.
Namenda is a branded drug, and the generic name is memantine. However, there are currently no generics or other brands available on the market. Namenda XR is an extended release version of this medication. A Namenda XR free trial is currently available from the manufacturer.
