Loryna contains ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and drospirenone (a progestin). These two active ingredients help prevent ovulation and thicken vaginal fluid, making it more difficult for sperm to reach and fertilize an egg. In addition to preventing pregnancy, Loryna may also be used to treat symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder or to reduce the appearance of acne in women who are at least 14 years old and have begun menstruating.
The hormones in Loryna may cause certain side effects, including nausea, breast tenderness, headache, changes in menstrual periods, or weight gain. If you have any side effects that last a long time or are bothersome, let your doctor know. Serious side effects are unlikely, but contact your doctor right away if you experience severe migraine headaches, swollen hands or feet, new or worsening depression, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice, or severe stomach pain.
