Only use the EpiPen JR in emergency situations for life-threatening allergic reactions (naphylaxis). Don't inject it into your child’s hands, feet, buttocks, or directly into a vein. EpiPen Jr contains half the normal adult dose of epinephrine. Only use each pen once, and do not give your child more than one injection. Even though you've used the EpiPen Jr, your child must still get medical attention. Epinephrine only lasts for as long as 20 minutes, and you need further treatment. Always tell medical personnel if you've used your child’s injector pen. If you're not sure how to use one, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. "Trainer" pens are often available to help you learn how to use it properly. Make sure that adults (e.g., teachers, nurses) know how to use the EpiPen Jr in case you're unable to give the injection to your child.
Common side effects are pale skin and sweating, mild but throbbing headache, tremors, muscle weakness, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, fast or pounding heartbeats, and feeling nervous or afraid. Be careful when administering epinephrine to children. The EpiPen Jr contains a children's dose, but depending on the size of the child in question, overdose is still a possibility. Signs of overdose include: anxiety or confusion, sudden numbness or weakness especially on only one side of the body, seizure, severe headache, buzzing in your ears, vision problems especially blurry vision, loss of balance, slurred speech, chest pain, uneven heartbeats, shortness of breath.
The EpiPen Jr contains epinephrine, which is used in many generic and brand name emergency treatments for anaphylaxis (e.g., Adrenaclick, Twinject, Auvi-Q). However, not all epinephrine injector pens provide a children's dose.
