Alinia treats diarrhea caused by either giardia or cryptosporidium, two microscopic parasites that may be found in untreated water. This medication is usually taken with food every 12 hours for 3 days. It will not treat other symptoms of giardiasis or cryptosporidiosis, such as nausea, fever, and vomiting.
The most commonly reported side effects of Alinia include abdominal pain, headache, and nausea. Serious side effects are unlikely, but let your doctor know if you experience any adverse effects that concern you. Get emergency medical attention if you have any signs of a severe allergic reaction.
