Aldara is used to treat anal or genital warts and actinic keratosis growths on the face or scalp. It may also be used to treat superficial basal cell carcinoma (a minor form of skin cancer) when surgery isn’t an option. Aldara is an immune response modifier, and it is believed to work by causing your immune system to fight abnormal skin growths.
Aldara may cause mild skin irritation, including itching, redness, tenderness, swelling, dryness, or flaking at the application site. It may also cause cold- or flu-like symptoms, back pain, nausea, diarrhea, or vaginal itching. If any of these mild side effects last a long time or get worse, tell your doctor. Stop using Aldara and contact your doctor right away if you experience swollen lymph nodes, difficult or painful urination, new skin growths, or a severe skin reaction.
