Vytorin is prescribed to treat elevated total cholesterol levels (hyperlipidemia) or to lower high LDL levels in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. Vytorin combats high cholesterol in two ways: by preventing its production in the liver and by preventing cholesterol absorption in the small intestine.
Vytorin side effects include muscle pain, memory problems, muscle tenderness, fever and changes in urination. Tell your doctor right away if any of these side effects are severe or persistent, especially if you experience confusion and serious memory loss. In rare cases, Vytorin may cause diabetes to worsen or cause liver problems.
