This medication is a natural bile acid, which dissolves cholesterol in bile and decreases the production of a certain type of cholesterol. This bile and cholesterol are responsible for the formation of stones in the gallbladder, which normally stores the ursodiol produced by the body. This medication also increases the flow of bile in patients with biliary cirrhosis.
If you experience the following severe side effects, contact your doctor immediately: signs of new infection, unusual tired feeling, jaundice, loss of appetite, unusual itching, upper stomach pain, nausea, clay-colored stool, or dark urine. The following side effects are relatively common and only need medical attention if they get worse: cold symptoms, hair loss, mild rash with itching, dizziness, headache, stomach discomfort or mild pain, nausea, constipation, and mild diarrhea.
