This oral contraceptive uses a combination of ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel (two female hormones) to prevent pregnancy by thinning the uterine lining, thickening cervical mucus, and suppressing ovulation. However, this formulation also alters the menstrual cycle, extending the time between periods so that the patient only has four periods annually.
Certain side effects may be more likely if you smoke. Some side effects are severe and require medical attention, including: symptoms of stroke, symptoms of a blood clot, symptoms of a heart attack, depression, liver problems, changes in migraine patterns, or breast lumps. Common side effects can include changes in weight or appetite, the appearance of freckles or darkening skin, problems with contact lenses, mild nausea and vomiting, bloating, cramps, increased body hair, loss of head hair, breast tenderness or swelling with or without nipple discharge, decreased sex drive, and vaginal itching or discharge.
