Azelex is prescribed to treat mild to moderate inflammatory acne. The active ingredient in Azelex is azelaic acid which has antimicrobial properties. It works by killing certain types of acne-causing bacteria.
Azelex may cause minor side effects such as itching, tingling, dryness, burning or stinging at the site of application, but these effects should lessen over time. If these side effects are severe or don’t go away, tell your doctor. Your skin may be sensitive to the medication. Serious but rare side effects that you should report to a healthcare provider right away include worsening asthma symptoms if you have asthma, worsening of cold sores if you already have them, allergic reaction, and loss of skin color.
