Provigil is a wakefulness-causing agent that works by altering the balance of natural chemicals and neurotransmitters in the brain. Most often, it is prescribed to treat the somnolence caused by the sleep disorder narcolepsy or work-shift disorder, although it is also used in combination with other therapies for sleep apnea.
Common side effects include insomnia, mild anxiety or nervousness, dizziness, headache, stuffy nose, back pain, nausea or upset stomach, and diarrhea. Some rarer side effects are severe and require immediate medical attention, including: allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, hives, swelling in the face or lips, swelling in the tongue or throat), hallucinations, unusual thoughts or behavior, anxiety, depression especially with suicidal ideations, unusual aggression, talking much more or much faster than usual, fever, jaundice, chest pain especially with difficulty breathing or uneven heart beats, shortness of breath, trouble swallowing, mouth sores, swelling in your legs, dark urine, the first sign of skin rash no matter how minor, skin rash or hives with blistering and peeling.
